Sword & Shield são excelentes games da franquia e trazem o melhor da experiência Pokémon ao Nintendo Switch. Não há uma revolução na fórmula clássica de gameplay, mas as mudanças e novas mecânicas são bem exploradas e nos dão uma perspectiva do que a série pode ser daqui para frente. A Gamefreak insiste em não deixar claro a jogadores inexperientes as forças e fraquezas dos tipos de Pokémon, o que pode afastar aqueles que se frustraram ao não entender o melhor jeito de entrar em combate.
